I’m aware of three stories about the circumstances surrounding Lowell George’s dismissal from Frank Zappa’s The Mothers of Invention. The most notable (and the one Lowell George is said to have shared) is that he introduced a new song – whose lyrics made reference to drugs and booze – and suggested Frank Zappa sing it. Drugs and booze were two things that didn’t fly with Zappa, so he sacked Lowell George. Yesterday – Sunday April 13 – would have been his 69th birthday.

Two other stories about the split are 1) Lowell George played a 15-minute guitar solo (one where he forget to turn on his amp) and 2) Frank Zappa felt he was far too talented to be merely a guitarist in a backing band and that he ought to start a band of his own. The only way Zappa saw that happening was to fire him.
